Silke's teaching is informed by diverse experience in commercial and art sectors of photographic industries. She has taught photography at different levels, including degree, A level, students with learning difficulties and provided training in a non-traditional environment. She is a senior lecturer in photographic practices at the University of Westminster , teaching on the BA (Hons) Photographic Arts and BA (Hons) Photography.

Silke's teaching in a non-traditional environment includes facilitation on projects like Gallery 37 in Birmingham (a five-week visual spectacle engaging unemployed young people to create art works), photography courses at the Big Issue Foundation and the Foyer Federation (temporary accommodation for homeless people), and digital video and photography courses at the St. Giles Trust (a daycentre for homeless people with mental health issues and addiction).

Outcomes of these projects include:

  • an exhibition at the Millennium Dome as part of the Foyer project
  • a presentation at the conference 'Creativity, Imagination and Learning: Impact of the Adult Community Learning Fund' for the Big Issue Foundation, producing a document demonstrating a teaching programme entitled 'Basic Skills through Creative Photography' for the ACLF at the Basic Skills Agency
  • an exhibition at the South London Gallery with the St. Giles Trust
  • and an exhibition at Gallery 37 in Birmingham .
